Walsh Homers Angels field shines in 4-2 win over As

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Jared Walsh’s 12th Homer kicked off a four-run second inning, four combined relievers for six scoreless innings and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Sunday.

David Fletcher doubled twice and had two RBIs. Taylor Ward added two hits to help the Angels win their second in a row for a division of the four-game series with their division-leading rivals.

Matt Olson and Sean Murphy led in races for the A. Oakland ended their two-game streak without a hit but failed to capitalize on the early leadership problems of Angels starter José Quintana.

José Suarez (2-0) threw three scoreless relief innings to win. Steve Cishek put out three batters and Mike Mayers put out two. Raisel Iglesias recorded all four outs for his ninth save.

Walsh dominated Cole Irvin (3-7). Kurt Suzuki and Ward followed with back-to-back singles and after Kean Wong’s sacrifice both scored on Fletcher’s double on the left field line. Phil Gosselin made a single to bring the score to 4-0.

Irvin allowed four runs and six hits in six innings with three strikeouts. The left-hander has been winless since May 4.

The A’s scored twice in the third when Quintana walked three in a row after Fletcher’s throwing error from the shortstop on ground leader Mark Canha. Murphy had a sacrificial fly.

Quintana, whose last victory came on September 5, 2019, while with the Cubs, has five strikeouts and four goals in three innings. He allowed two hits and a pair of unearned runs.

LAGARES BREAKS PACKED GLASS

Angels cleaning batter Juan Lagares hit a foul ball in the fifth inning that smashed a window at the Shibe Park Tavern in the Colosseum’s Second Bridge. Pieces of glass fell on several rows of seats and the fans were moved. The glass continued to fall before the workers destroyed the remaining pieces. A spokesman said no fans were injured.

When Oakland’s Stephen Piscotty hit a foul ball near the same section, fans started chanting, “Break that glass, break that glass.”

The Colosseum is the third oldest baseball stadium in the American League. The A’s recently received permission from MLB to consider alternative cities for possible relocation.
