Garden designer Danny Clarke
A new memorial garden at the Royal Gloucestershire Hospital, created to remember the lives lost to COVID-19, features built-in seating formed from Millboard’s improved grain boards in ‘smoked oak’, which the company has made donate to the project.
The garden, which in addition to a sunken seating area includes a pergola and raised beds, evokes a wooded glade and was installed by the Bristol New Homes Landscape company to a design by well-known Danny Clarke from the show. from the BBC’s ‘The Instant Jardinier’.
Funding for the garden was raised through the Memorial Dandelion Appeal, which allowed donors to purchase their own Memorial Dandelion created by artists Sadie Kitchen and Jackie Lantelli. These could be dedicated with a personal message in memory of a lost person, or simply offered as a symbolic thank you to the NHS and the healthcare sector for the tremendous care they have provided throughout the pandemic. The garden itself also features two wire sculptures of NHS staff created by Sadie and Jackie.
Caroline Birdsall, Marketing Director of Millboard, said the company was “ delighted and proud to have been involved in such an interesting project. It has been such a difficult year for so many people, and now more than ever, this kind of community initiative deserves to be supported. The garden represents a very fitting way to create a lasting tribute to those most deeply affected by the pandemic, as well as to provide valuable equipment for the future. It is already proving its worth as a place of rest and contemplation for hospital staff, patients and visitors.
Jack Deakin of New Homes Landscape echoed these comments. “We were very happy to have been involved in this amazing project with Danny Clarke and all the other contributors. The result is a beautiful place where staff and patients can relax, take a break and escape everyday stress.
HRH the Princess Royal, whose three of five grandchildren were born in hospital, officially opened the garden on April 21.
