With their backs to the walls, the Knicks were already set to take over Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night for Game 5 of the First Round Playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks with all they’ve got.

But if Tom Thibodeau needed a little inspiration for his struggling team, Atlanta Hawks center Clint Capela was happy to provide it – a farewell shot delivered before what the Hawks hope will be the final knockout. While the Hawks expect to get the Knicks ‘best effort, Capela said the Knicks’ physical play hasn’t been enough so far – and it won’t be now.

“They’re trying to play hard, to push our guys around, to talk…” Capela said. “But we can do that too. We show them as soon as we get back here. We can also push guys, we can also talk, so what are you going to do about it? And we can get a win with So qu are you going to do about it?

“Oh, Game 4, are you coming back?” Well, it’s going to happen again. Win the game. We’ve been talking and pushing you, so what are you going to do about it? That’s what happened. We can do it, too. We can be physical, but we can also win games. Now we come to your home to win this game again, to send you on vacation. “

The Knicks refused to bite into a war of words, with Julius Randle answering any questions about Capela’s word with “I don’t care” and Derrick Rose, who has been through many post-season wars, simply answering : “I’m 32 years old. I’ve never spoken like that in my life and I’m not going to start now because Clint Capela has started talking crazy. It doesn’t happen to us like that … We tell me old for that. “

But while Capela is sure the Hawks have responded that way and that the Knicks’ tenacity displayed throughout the season is not an issue, RJ Barrett noted, “We’ll see tomorrow.”

The game was physical throughout the series, but by the end of Game 4 in Atlanta, with the outcome no longer in doubt, spirits were set on fire. The Knicks believed Danilo Gallinari delivered a cheap shot to Reggie Bullock, coming in behind him with a blow to the back. Bullock attempted to run for the Atlanta bench as the teams headed for a timeout and when play resumed Randle gave Gallinari a forearm shiver.

“As the leader of my team, I can’t let this happen,” Randle said after the game. “I wasn’t trying to hurt her. You find yourself in a situation where no matter what, is doing a serious fault and just to let them know that we don’t accept this. [expletive] here.”

But Capela said the Hawks weren’t impressed.

“There are two ways to be physical,” Capela said. “There is when you keep playing the right way. There is physical when you try to play dirty. They are two different games. We play hard because we play the right way and win games that way. .

“[The Randle flagrant foul] says it all. You have no solution other than to play this way. You think you are playing hard by making mistakes like that. This is not the game. If you cannot play hard the right way, it is not play hard. Gross fouls aren’t fouls in the game. So you’re just trying to look physical but it doesn’t work. It’s kind of the last solution. “

Thibodeau, raised on a coaching staff where Jeff Van Gundy would relish such motivating fodder, would not play the game for the media part at least. But he had little doubt that his team would come to play on Wednesday.

“I think it’s all about perseverance, determination, fighting,” said Thibodeau. “This is playoff basketball. There are ups, there are downs. You have to go through it all. And whatever your circumstances, you have to have the ability to rise above those circumstances. . So this team has been doing it all year round. Lock in, focus on what needs to be done. “

“I just think that’s who we are as a team,” Randle added. “We’ve been counted all year. The odds have been against us, according to the pundits or whoever you want to call it all year. And that’s where we are at. Obviously we don’t come out without a fight and we don’t even care. We have the ultimate confidence and belief in who we are as a team, that we can do it. are at ease, in uncomfortable situations. “

Start Garden graduates are making their mark https://whimblegardens.co.uk/start-garden-graduates-are-making-their-mark/ https://whimblegardens.co.uk/start-garden-graduates-are-making-their-mark/#respond Fri, 28 May 2021 20:05:54 +0000 https://whimblegardens.co.uk/start-garden-graduates-are-making-their-mark/

Start Garden has been involved in Sportsman Tracker since its inception. The digital platform provides hunters and anglers with information and resources on when and where the best time is to start outdoor sports. Courtesy of Matt Read

Start Garden has made its presence felt in the business community of this region since its inception nine years ago by Rick DeVos.

Today, some of those Start Garden “graduates” are making their mark in the business community of West Michigan – and around the world.

The entrepreneurial ecosystem has invested financial, intellectual and social capital in hundreds of entrepreneurs, connecting them to essential resources at their stage of growth. Start Garden has created contests such as 5 × 5 Night and 100 Ideas for the benefit of those looking to turn their ideas into the business they are considering.

The 5 × 5 competition allows up to five finalists to present their ideas in five minutes to five judges who then decide which idea wins. Winners of 5 × 5 contests receive $ 5,000 to develop their idea.

Some of the people who have benefited from Start Garden’s 5 × 5 resources are Derik Lolli with Benefit Mobile, Jeff Courter with Sportsman Tracker, Jason Mejeur with MaxOne and Ben Harrison with Jonas Paul Eyewear.

Benefit Mobile was born out of Lolli’s experience selling stacks of plastic gift cards to raise money for her children’s school. It has morphed into an app-based platform to sell digital gift cards as fundraisers.

Benefit Mobile has since raised millions of dollars in investor funds and in 2018 merged with an industry leading company. At the end of 2020, it was sold to one of the biggest companies in the gift card industry.

“It is every entrepreneur’s dream to create a business that is considered successful for both its investors and its community,” said Lolli, Founder and CEO of Benefit Mobile. “I am eternally grateful to Start Garden for believing in Benefit and contributing not only dollars but also much-needed network, advice and guidance throughout our nine-year journey. With their help, we were able to donate millions of dollars to local schools and nonprofits, all while leading to an exciting outing for our team. We look forward to seeing the future impacts under new ownership. “

The purchase price of Benefit Mobile is confidential, under the terms of the transaction agreement, but it is significant.

“The initial investment in Benefit Mobile allowed us to secure a small portion of the company’s ownership – low single-digit numbers if we’re talking about a percentage,” said Paul Moore, director of Start Garden. “But his success more than covered the 300 or so small investments of $ 5,000 and $ 20,000 that we made to build an entrepreneurial culture that Derek grew up on. And while it’s great that we’ve covered our costs, the biggest victory is that we’ve inspired hundreds of entrepreneurs to take action and give their ideas a chance.

Courter is the co-founder of Sportsman Tracker, a digital platform that provides hunters and anglers with information and resources on when and where the best time is to start their outdoor sports. The company’s flagship app is called HuntWise.

“Start Garden was really part of the initial training of our business from day one,” Courter said. “I developed an idea and around the same time I had the initial assumption of what we were doing they had their 5 × 5 Night. We brought that concept to it and we had our first success there. They gave us $ 5,000, then $ 20,000 later. We incorporated in 2015, but they invested in us before that, so they helped us from the start.

In addition to the money, Courter said Start Garden provided them with work space at 40 Pearl Street in Grand Rapids as they began to emerge as a business. The nonprofit has also surrounded them with people who know about entrepreneurship and some of these people are currently members of the Sportsman Tracker team.

“When you start out as a founder you don’t know what you don’t know, so they’ve helped foster our growth by surrounding us with people who have helped us get to where we are now,” he said. -he declares.

In 2020, the company launched HuntCast 2.0, which is mapping technology to cover public and private land boundaries for all 50 states to go hunting, unlock 3D mapping options, and provide over 350 state and federal map overlays. The app also offers downloadable options such as offline maps, peak times for over a dozen North American species, and landowner plot and contact hunting.

In 2018, Start Garden revealed a new initiative called 100 Ideas where individuals can submit 100-second videos of themselves presenting their idea. There were 812 people who entered the competition in 2018. About 100 people were selected and they received $ 1,000 to invest in their ideas.

These 100 people returned for a demo day event to explain why they should be among 10 chosen for an additional $ 20,000. Later, 10 people are chosen to win $ 20,000.

The competition was held in 2018 and 2019. It was halted in 2020 due to the pandemic, but this year the competition is back and individuals can submit their ideas until July 26.

Data-driven thinkingIs written by members of the media community and contains new ideas about the digital revolution in media.

Today’s column is written by James Rosewell, Founder and CEO of 51Degrees.

Pillars

The Word Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was created to standardize an open World Wide Web for all.

As such, this powerful body seeks to agree on technical standards for interoperability between browsers.

Within the W3C is an entity called Technical Architecture Group (TAG) which defines the architectural direction of the web and includes in its members a character no less illustrious than Sir Tim Berners-Lee, “father of the Internet.”

But there is an inherent problem with the fundamental principles that TAG relies on to make its decisions.

Google has recognized this. One of Chrome Privacy Sandbox’s proposals, First-Party Sets (FPS), calls for bundling domains it owns, such as youtube.com and google.com, and treating them as one domain from a standpoint. data sharing. .

This proposal recently justified a W3C TAG public report in which he observed that: “This proposal undermines the concept of origin, and we see the origin [domain name] as a structural pillar of Web architecture. “

This statement highlights a central problem, which is that the architecture of the Web is no longer suitable for its purpose and that the “structural pillar” of domain names needs to be upgraded.

Origin story

“Origin” is a geek synonym for domain, which is the name associated with a web page in the address bar of a web browser. The domain name is affiliated with the brand of the organization that operates the website and security is provided via a padlock icon.

For example, the domain name and hence the primary origin of this article is adxchanger.com.

Trust

The domain names of partners that help publishers operate their web properties are not visible to the user and are referred to as third party origins.

Google is clean Chrome Blog explicitly defines “third party” as follows: “If the domain associated with a cookie is an external service and not the website in the user’s address bar, this is considered cross-site (or ‘third party’) context.”

W3C and TAG consider third party origins untrustworthy. But this ignores the fact that the use of these “third party” providers is controlled by the first relying party with which the individual has chosen to interact.

Dominion over data distribution

When people agree to the terms and conditions, it’s an agreement with a legal entity, not with a domain name.

For example, the Google legal entity operates many domains. If people consent to Google collecting and processing their personal data, Google undoubtedly wants this consent to be applied to all domains and services operated by Google, regardless of the domain names used.

But how is it possible to communicate this in today’s web architecture? Google’s FPS proposal shows us that Google itself realizes that we have to look beyond domain names for a solution.

Great domination

While the concept of FPS may seem simple, it’s actually unfair to small businesses. If a small business needs a service that it cannot create or operate on its own, it will look to a competitive market of supply chain vendors to provide that service. Some of the many services that most publishers rely on include website analytics, fraud prevention, shopping cart or payment technologies, and advertising.

It is common for small businesses to band together to compete with large organizations.

These companies, however, could not become a leading set.

W3C and TAG acknowledge this when they said in their FPS report: “It is likely that this proposal will only benefit large, powerful entities that control both the implementation and the services.”

Origin of the upgrade

And so, I argue that now is the time to upgrade the “origin” pillar of the web. In order to ensure a level playing field, we need to improve the transparency and auditability of data transfers to people, regardless of the organization that collects and processes their personal data.

We need a structure that allows people to trust the first party supply chain choices they interact with. This means providing them with:Sample consent user interface from SWAN.community with icon passcode protection for email address.

  1. Verifiable identity of the brand including the property with which they interact
  2. Transparency to see the supply chains that organizations rely on
  3. Auditability to prove that confidentiality choices are respected
  4. Penalties for parties who break the law or rules

To the right: Sample consent user interface from SWAN.community with icon passcode protection for email address.

the SWAN.community project, of which this author is one of the founders, is a way of superimposing such a method on the existing web, not only conceptually but also in practice.

W3C TAG

TAG is made up of passionate and talented engineers. But they are neither lawyers nor businessmen – and they have, in the past, interrupted discussion of the points advocated in this article, which is, of course, disappointing. For an example, see this GitHub thread on choosing the supply chain.

However, the web is for everyone, not just trillion dollar companies, browser vendors, and the people who build the web. We need to work together to ensure that TAG and W3C engage with the wider community of businesses and people who use the standards they propagate to promote a level playing field.

People and authors (aka, editors or operators of websites in the W3C language) should take precedence over browser implementers.

It should also be noted that what we are talking about here is not limited to the open web. If a brand wants to send their own proprietary data to improve advertising inside a walled garden, this too is considered an inter-site data transfer.

Your voice

I urge you to make your voice heard before it’s too late – and there are many, mostly free, ways to participate in the W3C debate.

  1. Raise an issue against the TAG Security and Privacy Questionnaire to request a review. (free)
  2. Join W3C Community Privacy Group and advocate for a change in architecture regarding origins or support others. (free)
  3. Follow the proposals on the Community Web Incubation Group (WICG) and highlight the advantages for the group of rethinking the concept of “origin”. (free)
  4. Visit swan.community and join the project. (free)
  5. Join the W3C and vote in the December 2021 elections to select different TAG members who are open to these changes. (not free)

While you may never have contacted W3C, I can assure you that W3C wants to hear more voices – especially those that are traditionally under-represented, such as small publishers, brands and their marketing agencies. .

As we reform the web, let’s make sure we establish the policies and architecture that allow new start-ups, small businesses, and most importantly, individuals around the world to participate online without being constrained by unilateral decisions of the world. dominant platforms.

W3C and TAG provide a way to solve the problems faced by digital advertising. But all of our voices are needed for this approach to be successful.

Elon Musk takes the Starlink broadband project to a backyard garden in Cork https://whimblegardens.co.uk/elon-musk-takes-the-starlink-broadband-project-to-a-backyard-garden-in-cork/ https://whimblegardens.co.uk/elon-musk-takes-the-starlink-broadband-project-to-a-backyard-garden-in-cork/#respond Wed, 26 May 2021 11:55:00 +0000 https://whimblegardens.co.uk/elon-musk-takes-the-starlink-broadband-project-to-a-backyard-garden-in-cork/

Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite broadband revolution has been tested in the back garden of a Cork home since the start of the year it emerged.

At it @ cork’s Tech Fest event, the Managing Director of Ireland’s National Space Center (NSC), Rory FitzPatrick, confirmed to attendees that Mr. Musk SpaceX’s Starlink gear is in place, after months of speculation and rumors about plans to society in the country.

During his Transforming Earth from Space talk to cork, Mr FitzPatrick, who lives in Carrigaline, said: “The first Starlink test system in Ireland is in my garden. He’s been there since January.

“We took delivery of the ground stations on campus in December, connected them through the Enet backbone in January, and launched the beta test antenna at home as soon as it arrived.”

The satellite has been in Rory Fitzpatrick’s back garden since January.

The Irish space headquarters in Elfordstown, near Midleton, in east Cork, had previously kept low on speculation it was becoming another location for Mr Musk’s Starlink ground equipment, due to a deal. of non-disclosure.

However, what looks like giant golf balls have been seen at the Midleton facility, a telltale sign to Starlink watchers around the world.

The Starlink project has become a fascination among tech enthusiasts, with Musk’s vision to dominate the fast broadband landscape in hard-to-reach areas.

Starlink says its satellites are more than 60 times closer to Earth than traditional satellites, resulting in lower latency and the ability to support services typically not possible with traditional satellite internet.

Latency is the time it takes to send data from one point to another. Starlink says having its network of nearby satellites scattered around the atmosphere means better quality for video calls and online games.

As more and more satellites are launched, more and more ground stations are installed and networking software is improved, meaning that speed, latency and data availability will improve dramatically. for users, Starlink said.

Kerry’s remote valley, Black Valley, has also been the subject of speculation in recent months as a location for Starlink equipment.

It has now emerged that all Starlink customers in the current beta test are served through the NSC.

This includes users in so-called “dead zone” areas like Knockawaddra, West Cork and the Black Valley.

These areas are areas where the signal has remained elusive for traditional broadband services – precisely the kind of customers Starlink wants to capture.

Mr FitzPatrick showed photos and videos of the Starlink facility at the NSC while discussing the potential of national broadband in Ireland, as well as discussing the future of Starlink and other space technology efforts to transform the life.

The NSC is Europe’s most westerly teleport and Ireland’s only commercial land station.

Opened as Elfordstown Earthstation in 1984, the 24 million euro facility will celebrate 10 years of operation as NSC this year.

The company provides commercial broadcast services, ground control support for satellites and spacecraft, academic research partnerships and consulting in the space industry.

NSC’s co-located Space Campus is home to more than a dozen Irish space startups and space companies headquartered in the EU.

Although the cost of joining the Starlink community is much more expensive than joining regular service providers, it can attract weary users in Ireland who have been waiting for years to receive quality broadband in their area.

Beta users in the US had to purchase Starlink ground equipment for $ 499 (€ 408) plus a monthly fee of $ 99, while similar costs will exist in Ireland.

Mr. Musk’s SpaceX company has long had ambitions for satellite broadband, with years of research and development from Starlink reportedly costing more than $ 10 billion.

Launching 60 satellites per pass, it aims to have nearly 1,500 by the end of this year or early next year, space experts say.

In a show of confidence in its exploits, SpaceX filed documents with the International Telecommunications Union for 30,000 satellites at the end of 2019.

South Los Angeles startup Crop Swap grows micro-farms in gardens https://whimblegardens.co.uk/south-los-angeles-startup-crop-swap-grows-micro-farms-in-gardens/ https://whimblegardens.co.uk/south-los-angeles-startup-crop-swap-grows-micro-farms-in-gardens/#respond Tue, 25 May 2021 11:00:28 +0000 https://whimblegardens.co.uk/south-los-angeles-startup-crop-swap-grows-micro-farms-in-gardens/

Most homes in South Los Angeles have a typical lawn. But once Jamiah Hargins is done with them, they’re planted with kale, rainbow chard, tomatoes, and enough other produce to feed 50 neighborhood families every week.

“My business partners with owners who have a front yard and want to do something positive,” says Hargins, founder of Crop Swap LA, a startup that installs and manages community gardens, which it calls microfarms. Neighbors pay monthly subscriptions to ultra-local food, and owners receive both a share of the produce and a reduction in revenue. “We maintain it, but they get a portion of the income every month,” Hargins says.

When Hargins opened his own vegetable garden at home a few years ago and ended up growing more than he and his wife could eat, he turned to Nextdoor to set up produce exchanges with neighbors. Then he started to think about how to create the infrastructure to grow local foods on a larger scale.

View Park, the area where the first micro-farm was planted, is considered a food desert because locals do not have easy access to large supermarkets. Through Crop Swap LA, residents can subscribe to a 3-pound mix of fresh, organic greens and vegetables for $ 36 per month or $ 43 with delivery.

The start-up worked with a group called Enviroscape LA to plan landscaping, which uses a growth method where “you pack as much as you can,” says Hargins. Other techniques used on the farm also increase productivity, including mesh “socks” on plant roots that help provide optimum temperature, airflow and drainage for plants to grow faster.

A water recycling system circulates water through the soil, making it rich in nutrients and using a tiny fraction of the water needed to maintain a manicured lawn. “We only use 8% of the water that was previously used to grow grass there, but now to grow food. I think about 700 gallons per day were needed to keep this weed healthy. It’s amazing how much it is when you really count it, ”says Hargins, noting that water bills have come down dramatically for the View Park owner of that first micro-farm.

The company plans to work the front yards at a time because it is often unused space – homeowners can still use their backyard – and its own team can easily travel twice a week to maintain the plants, harvest the food and distribute the bonus to subscribers. But it can work in backyards in some cases; some future micro-farms could have chickens and produce eggs, or domestic beehives for honey production.

Some similar startups have started in other cities, like Lettuce, an Austin company that used backyards to grow produce for people nearby. Lettuce appears to have folded and the business model can be difficult to maintain. But it’s also possible that the timing is better now, as the pandemic has prompted more people to try food subscription programs.

A grant from LA2050, a Goldhirsh Foundation program, helped Crop Swap LA install the first microfarm. Hargins says that because every garden requires extensive maintenance, it wouldn’t make sense to convert every front yard. But he hopes to grow to the hundreds, checking every yard by testing the soil to make sure it’s a healthy place to grow. It’s a smarter use of space than grass, especially in a drought-prone city where it’s hard to keep the grass green, as it’s possible to grow so much food in a small area. “It’s embarrassing that we haven’t done this before,” he says.
